Getting HMCDRetro Running (No Headaches)
I downloaded HMCDRetro last Tuesday.
It took six minutes.
Go to hmcdretro.com.
Click “Download” (not) “Learn More,” not “Resources.” Just “Download.”
You don’t need an account. You don’t need to sign up for emails. (Yes, I checked.
Twice.)
It’s a ZIP file. Unzip it. Run the EXE.
That’s it.
Your PC needs Windows 10 or newer. 8GB RAM. A graphics card from this decade. If your laptop runs YouTube without freezing, it’ll run HMCDRetro.
Don’t install it in Program Files. Put it on your desktop instead. Windows sometimes blocks files there (but) HMCDRetro doesn’t trigger that.
Stuck at “Loading ROMs”? Check if your ROM folder is empty. Or if you named it “roms” instead of “ROMS.”
Case matters.
(Windows usually doesn’t care. This does.)
First time you open it? You’ll see three columns: Games, Systems, Filters. Click any game.
Press Enter. It boots.

I click around HMCDRetro like it’s a garage sale I’m not supposed to be in.
Which is basically what it is.
You can scroll the homepage or use the search bar. Type “Mario” and get every Mario game ever dumped into this thing. No filters needed (yet.)
Categories? Yeah, there’s “NES”, “SNES”, “Genesis”. Also “Puzzle”, “Shooter”, “Platformer”.
Not deep. Not confusing. Just pick one and go.
Filters exist but I rarely use them. Sort by year? By file size?
By how much I wish this ROM worked? (It doesn’t.)
ROMs are just game files. Like a PDF is a book file. Except these run on emulators.
Not Adobe Reader.
Want a specific title? Search it. Want to wander?
Click “Random Game”. It’s like spinning a wheel of nostalgia with no safety net. (I once got Tetris for the Game Boy Color.

Build your library by favoriting games. Not downloading. Just marking them.

Save states? Yes. Hit F5 to save.

Turn off VSync if things stutter. Lower resolution if your laptop wheezes. Try scanlines for that CRT glow.
