I’ve wasted hours trying mods on the wrong Vastaywar.
You have too.
Which Vastaywar Can You Mod (that’s) the real question. Not the vague lore dump or the flashy trailer tease. The actual list.
The hard yes or no.
Players keep slotting mods into companions that don’t accept them. Then they wonder why their build falls apart in boss fights. It’s not your fault.
The game doesn’t tell you clearly.
This guide fixes that. No theorycrafting. No guesswork.
Just the confirmed, tested list of moddable Vastaywar. And why it matters for combat.
You’ll know exactly which ones to invest in.
And which ones to skip before you waste another mod slot.
Read this first.
Then build smarter.
What a Vastaywar Actually Is
A Vastaywar is a special companion. Like a bonded creature or ally. Not just another pet you pick up.
It’s got personality. It’s got presence. (And no, your starter fox isn’t one.)
You’ll find the full list on the Vastaywar page. Which Vastaywar Can You Mod? Only the real ones.
Not every companion qualifies.
Modding means adding upgrades. Like armor plating, damage boosts, or healing pulses (to) your Vastaywar. It’s not cosmetic.
It changes how they fight. How they survive. How they help you.
But here’s the catch: only certain Vastaywar have mod slots. Some have three. Some have one.
Some have none. Don’t waste time trying to mod a common drake (it) won’t take it.
I mod for survivability first. Always. If my Vastaywar dies in the first wave, the damage boost doesn’t matter.
You want utility? Go for crowd control mods. You want raw power?
Stack damage. But don’t assume all Vastaywar scale the same way. They don’t.
Pick one that fits your playstyle (not) the flashiest one. That drake with glowing eyes? Cool.
But can it tank? No. Then skip it.
Which Vastaywar Can You Mod
Kavats and Kubrows are the only moddable Vastaywar.
I’ve bred both. I’ve lost count of how many Smeeta Kavats I’ve sacrificed for better crit chance mods. (They’re cute.
They’re also disposable.)
Kavats look like sleek, alien cats. Some have tufted ears. Others glow faintly.
They boost key chance or drop resources like credits or mods. You slot mods into them just like Warframes.
Kubrows are dog-shaped. Lean. Sharp-eyed.
They don’t purr. They bark at enemies and sometimes heal you mid-fight.
They handle damage, crowd control, or health buffs. A good Kubrow holds aggro while you reload. A bad one runs straight into a Nullifier’s bubble.
(Yes, I’ve watched that happen.)
Both come in breeds. Smeeta Kavat gives luck-based crits. Adarza Kavat gives armor stacks.
Rell Kubrow stuns. Vulpine Kubrow boosts damage. Breed = ability = modding limits.
You don’t buy them from a vendor. You start with breeding or a quest. That’s where modding begins (not) at the foundry, but at the incubator.
Which Vastaywar Can You Mod? Just these two.
Everything else is cosmetic or scripted. No exceptions.
You’ll spend hours farming DNA samples. You’ll restart breeding trees when a mutation fails. (It always fails at least once.)
Modding them isn’t optional. It’s mandatory if you want them to survive past level 20.
They die fast without proper mods.
You know this already. You’ve seen it.
How Companion Mods Actually Work
Kavats and Kubrows get their own mod slots. Just like your Warframe.
I slot mods into them the same way I do my own gear. No extra steps. No weird menus.
They take three kinds of mods: stats (health, armor, shields), attack boosts (damage, crit), and precept mods.
Precept mods are special. They trigger only when certain things happen. Like ‘Fetch’ for Kubrows (it) makes them grab dropped loot automatically.
Or ‘Charm’ for Kavats (they) stun enemies when you’re low on health.
You don’t slap random mods on them and hope. Breed matters. A Raptor Kubrow is built for speed and damage.
A Vastaywar? Not so much. (Which Vastaywar Can You Mod (good) question. What Is Vastaywar Forum breaks it down.)
Your playstyle matters too. Want a tanky Kavat? Skip damage.
Stack armor and health. Want a support Kubrow? Go for ‘Guardian’ or ‘Rescue’ precepts.
Here’s a real starter setup for a new Kubrow:
– Animal Instinct (health)
– Armored Hide (armor)
– Feral Bite (damage)
– Fetch (precept)
That’s it. Four mods. Works right away.
You’ll tweak it later. But this gets you running.
Why overthink it? Try it. See what sticks.
Not All Companions Play by the Same Rules

Vastaywar is just a fancy name for Kavats and Kubrows.
That’s it.
Which Vastaywar Can You Mod? Only those two.
Nope. Predasites? Vulpaphylas?
Sentinels? Nope. MOAs?
Also nope. They’re not Vastaywar. They don’t take Vastaywar mods.
You can customize them (but) not with Kavat or Kubrow mods. Sentinels use Sentinel-specific mods. Predasites and Vulpaphylas use Link Mods (totally) different slot types, different UI, different stats.
MOAs get their own chassis and weapon swaps.
It’s not that they’re “less moddable.”
They’re modded elsewhere.
Trying to jam a Kavat mod into a Sentinel will fail. Every time. The game won’t even let you drag it.
(Good thing, honestly.)
People get tripped up because all companions feel like they should work the same way.
They don’t.
Kavats and Kubrows share one system.
Everything else uses its own.
No overlap. No exceptions.
If you’re staring at a mod screen wondering why your Vulpaphyla won’t accept that sleek new Fur Pattern mod (now) you know. It’s not broken. It’s just not built for that.
Stick to the right companion type.
Save yourself the click.
Mod Your Vastaywar Like It’s Yours
I pick mods based on how I play. Not what the wiki says is meta. You do too.
Right?
Vastaywar are Kavats and Kubrows. Which Vastaywar Can You Mod? All of them.
But not all mods fit all breeds.
Some Kavats hit hard. Some Kubrows tank. I check their base abilities first.
Ranking mods matters. A rank 0 Steel Fiber does nothing. I rank mine.
Then I ask: what do I need them to do? Not what looks cool.
Always.
Try one mod set for three missions. Swap if it feels off. No theorycrafting (just) play.
You’ll learn faster by failing than reading guides.
| Breed | Strength | Good Mod Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Kubrow | Tanking | Health, armor, status resistance |
| Kavat | Melee burst | Crit chance, attack speed, finisher damage |

Your Vastaywar Are Ready
Which Vastaywar Can You Mod? Kavats and Kubrows. That’s it.
No guessing. No wasted time on companions that won’t take mods.
I’ve seen too many Tenno grind for hours. Only to realize their companion can’t be upgraded. Frustrating.
Unnecessary.
You want power. You want control. You want your companion to fight with you (not) just stand there.
So stop wondering. Start building.
Grab a Kavat or Kubrow today. Slot your first mod. Watch them hit harder, survive longer, matter more.
This isn’t theory. It’s what works.
Go in. Equip. Test.
Repeat.
Your next mission is stronger because of this.
Now get in the game. And mod like you mean it.
